Inspire Magazine

  • I shot an editorial for Inspire Magazine a couple months ago and its finally published! Inspire is a Slovakian fashion and lifestyle magazine, so I can’t really tell you to go out and grab a copy, but this is the whole spread. I shot this at The Cliffs and I think we all got a nice workout during the shoot. It had looked like rain all morning, but with a perfect overcast sky. However, as soon as we got on location the haze burned off and the sun shone bright on us the whole time. I came away with a major sunburn but I'm so happy with how the spread turned outI Big Thanks to my team… Stylist: Linda Drabova Hair/Make up: Brooke Hill Model: Joy Lui with NoTies

    Happy Holidays everyone!

Happy Halloweeeeekend!

So I am by no means a baby photographer. However, my favorite hair/mua just brought this little pumpkin into the world. Just in time for Halloween too, which is her favorite holiday. So of course we had to snap some pictures of the wee one. I have to say I think my little make-shift pumpkin outfit worked out pretty well :)

Happy Halloween!

Found: Grand Canyon

So next month I am participating in a group exhibit at the local gallery Art Produce . The exhibit was actually put together by my landlord Lori Lipsman who is an artist herself. Inspired by a hiking trip she took through the Grand Canyon a few years ago, the exhibit and installation is loosely themed to canyons. So I've been sifting through my photographs of the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas from the trip I took there while driving cross-country a few years back. I also decided to shoot some new film in San Diego's canyons. But I found some images I liked from that trip and thought I'd share them with you anyway. So here you go!

I should have the rest of the shoot from this weekend ready to go by the end of the week, as I know at least one of you is patiently waiting to see them all ;)

Weekend Warriors

This was a great weekend. A few awesome days of good ol' fashion fun. Two fun things in particular happened. We celebrated my good friend Dain's birthday (still not sure if she turned 6 or 26). I also had a pretty big studio shoot that went smashingly. For your viewing pleasure here is a sneak peak of both. Check back this week for more elaborate photo fun!

Christmas comes once a month...

... and in San Diego we call it Vibe Night

If you are lucky enough to have experienced a Vibe Night than you know it can't really be described with words. If not you should come check it out for yourself. Vibe Night was started a couple years ago by a group of local musicians looking for a sense of community. It started in the pool room of one of the musicians houses with about twice as many people performing as guests. These days Vibe night pulls in enough people to pack entire houses with little wiggle room. Performers Derek Evans , Jakob Martin and Brodeeva are the regulars with special guests each month. This month we were graced by the lyrical mastery of Rob Deez who is becoming quite the regular himself because we can't get enough. Vibe night is a house concert where you bring yourself "and two people as cool as you" as Chad of Brodeeva likes to say followed by "If you don't know anyone that cool, bring some beers and make some new friends". And he couldn't be more right. I went to my first Vibe Night solo, still relatively new to the area and most of my friends being on the East coast. I left Vibe with a new family, and I couldn't be more grateful. The men of Vibe have done, and continue to do exactly what they set out to do. Create a community. Not only amongst themselves but with their friends, family and fans as well. The guys all sing and play on one another songs and the crowd is usually singing and dancing as well. It might be illegal in some states to have that much fun and genuine love and respect packed into such a small space.

One night a month a viber opens up their home to about 100 or so people who all have a common interest. To come to an intimate house concert with good friends, good food, good wine and beer and great music. And the night never fails. Its hard to leave after a Vibe and when you finally do its hard to come down from the infamous Vibe Night High you're sure to experience. Its safe to say Vibe Night is most peoples favorite night of the month, every month.

This last Saturday was our first official Summer Vibe Night of the year, and was held outside in the nice cool San Diego air. I thought you might like to see what you missed out on. Enjoy, and if you make it out to San Diego be sure to ask me for the Vibe Line so you can experience it for yourself.

Good Night!
Kate

p.s I like how the last picture made a music note out of the light. Vibe Night magic :)

Pin-It-Forward ...Feels like home.

Today is my day to Pin-It-Forward ! If you haven't been following along, this is a project from the brain child of Victoria from the fabulous blog Sfgirlbybay put together with the awesome new site Pinterest. This is a site where you can go and create personal 'pin boards' from all your favorite images on the web. I've been using it for a couple months now and really love it. I highly recommend checking it out.

The theme of this pin-it-forward was 'what home means to you'. I go over this topic in my head every single day. 3 years ago I moved from my home to the complete opposite side of the country. Literally as far away as I could go without crossing water or leaving the country. While my new home has certain aspects I love about it, good friends, great weather and lively culture, it definitely doesn't feel like 'home'. Not yet anyway. So while pinning this board together I found myself collecting images that reminded me of the place I grew up. A small town in the middle of nowhere. Filled with horses and cows and old barns and trees. Lots of trees. I lived on a lake my whole life, and although the ocean is amazing, I know to truly feel at home I'll need to live on one again.
Home to me is also big veggie gardens and fresh baked goods. Its warm wood stoves in the winter after playing in the snow all day. Its tea time with my family and a house filled with pets. Home is little windy dirt roads and deer and fox constantly in my backyard. These are just some of my images I chose to represent the home in my mind. To see the rest please visit my actual board here . Warning I may have gone a bit overboard :)
Thanks for letting my share my vision of home with you! I really loved this process and will probably keep adding to my board even if its just for me. Also please check out the board of LA born and bred Stay in the Lines who posted Friday. And make sure to check out the lovely Life Sunny Side Down tomorrow to see what home means to her! And thank you again to Victoria for letting my participate and introducing me to this amazing site!

Happy Monday!

Magic in the air

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong on a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you

-t.petty

This is one of my favorite songs and I felt it was perfect to accompany this shoot I did a little while back. Deana is a fabulous hair and makeup artist who works on most of my shoots for me. She also happens to be gorgeous so I was thrilled when she asked me to take some pictures as a gift to her husband. The day was magical. And so it goes...

Happy June!

Dainty* Handcrafted...Finally

A few months ago Dain of Dainty* Handcrafted and I got together for a huge shoot for her new spring line of handcrafted headbands and accessories. This is the second season I've shot for her and I love doing it every time. Her work is fresh and original and very fun to wear. (I know because I have quite a few pieces of my own.) I absolutely love how these came out and can't wait for her next major update to do this again. You can find Dainty* here and her shop here. We were waiting for the shop update to do a big reveal, so I'm excited to finally be able to share these with you. I had a hard time narrowing down to a couple favorites, so enjoy about 16 instead... :)

Happy Sunday!!!

Snail Mail

My new business cards came in the mail today, I just ordered them Sunday and they were supposed to take 10-14 days. So this was a nice little surprise. Still waiting on the postcards I ordered, with any luck they'll come tomorrow or Monday.

I'll hopefully be back tomorrow morning with a couple posts that are well over due.
Goodnight!

Autumn de Wilde is brilliant.

So I've always been a huge huge fan of most everything photographer Autumn de Wilde does. She's one of the few artists working in the music industry whom I really believe creates unique images. She doesn't just take pictures, she creates them. Images that are both creative and insightful to what the music she's representing is really about. She is fun, very quirky and young. And I find everything she does very inspiring. Her most famous images are probably those of Elliot Smith and Beck. Autumn is also the mastermind behind a huge group of other artists as well including but not limited to Death Cab, Rilo Kiley, Fiona Apple, Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, The White Stripes, She and Him etc etc. Basically she is brilliant. I came across this video on her myspace today and wanted to share it. I especially love her description of it.

"So I spent a couple of days in Nashville recently. Got this idea to put 8ft mirrors in the forest and delve into the surreal compartment of my brain. The guys have a similar compartment in theirs and by the end of the day we had abandoned reality and redefined right, left, front and back. Perhaps I have talked to my old friend E one too many times about his father's Parallel Universe Theory. The forest will never look the same to us. I want to bring my mirrors with me everywhere now. An Indonesian fortune teller whispered in my ear, and The Hanged Man was dealt to us in more places than you might think. The search for understanding sometimes ends upside-down so the search is on my friends.... tell me what you have found.
Autumn d.W."

I really wish I had thought of this. Enjoy.

What do you think? Any other photographers who think and shoot like this I should check out?

Puppy Love

This is Daisy. She's our house guest from now until Sunday while a friend is out of town. I already have puppy fever pretty bad, and she's just going to cause it to increase 100x. Isn't she gorgeous?! She's only about a year old so she is still super active and a cuddle machine. We're already so in love. I'm very excited for a puppy filled weekend. Be back later with most likely a million pictures of her. Those honey brown eyes beg to be photographed :)

Weekend Love (plus some self portraits)

These last few weekends in San Diego have been sort of amazing. The weather has been nice and warm and sunny. Our windows and door have been open and the birds have literally been chirping all day. Our new apartment has an amazing yard and we've been taking full advantage of it. There has been a noticeable increase in how much literature I've been reading too, which seems positively correlated to the wonderful light our new place gets. We had friends over this Friday night and last. Bought a nice grill, make some yummy potatoes and
veggie kabobs and tofu fingers. Not to mention my favorite salad which is so simple and delicious: Baby spinach, strawberry slices and crumbled goat cheese with a little bit of Trader Joes sweet poppy seed dressing. It just tastes like summer!

Anyway it was a great relaxing weekend But I still managed to get some work done. I designed some new business cards and promo cards today (below) that I'm very excited to get printed. And Friday I played around with some new equipment and did a mini self portrait shoot. I normally wouldn't post pictures of myself, but I really like the way these came out, and I'm in a very sharing mood.
Anyone else have an amazing weekend? I feel like most my weekends from here on out will be just as great. There seems to be this positive energy in my new apartment thats just constantly flowing all throughout and I couldn't be happier. Anyway, I'll leave you with some pictures and the wish for a great week ahead. The last one is my favorite so scroll down!

Thanks for looking, Goodnight!

Derek and I want to live in a tree house (Image Heavy)

There are a million things I love about my boyfriend. But one of my favorite things is that he enthusiastically agrees there would be nothing better than to live in a tree house, in a remote location, with little to no cell reception and birds and deer as neighbors. Not to say we don't like people or the energetic buzz of the city life, because we do. I think we've both just to come to realize how much better it feels to be surrounded by clean fresh air, and trees so tall they make you feel insignificant to the world. This is a world I grew up in. Playing house with acorns and berries in the roots of big trees. I know that is why the heart of me wants to get back there. I haven't pinpointed the exact source of Derek's desire. But I think its just because he has an old soul like me.

Anyway, Derek is in the process of recording a new album. A lot of the songs, while not intentionally so, touch on this topic. Not all in a extremely obvious way, and maybe its just more apparent to me because I know what all the lyrics really mean. So it just seemed natural to do the artwork for the album in the same fashion. We've actually done a few shoots already and while I won't disclose the exact images we are going to use, I will share a few. These Images are some of my favorite from the most recent segment that we shot over the weekend. It was hard for me to choose just a few favorite so I decided to make this an image heavy post. Here goes:

Good Night
